The illegal bunkerers dug a pit at the leaking point. A ball and valve was installed on the drilled line and a rubber hose was attached to siphon the crude oil from the line. The tap was however left opened after their bunkering activities that eventually led to the spill. This affected the surrounding mangrove and other plants around the leaking point.
