How to use the monitor

Quick answers for exploring records, reading maps and interpreting source gaps.

Where should I start?

Use the national explorer for a map overview, oil spills for incident investigation, or gas flares for period and geography comparisons.

Does “not supplied” mean zero?

No. It means the source field is absent or not usable. The product never silently turns a missing quantity into zero.

Why is a point outside the land boundary?

Some incidents and flare locations are offshore. A point in the Gulf of Guinea can be valid and should remain visible.

Why can't I find every block polygon?

Block time-series names do not always match polygon names exactly. Historic licences, current leases, subdivisions and fields may use related but non-identical labels. Unverified matches are labelled “location not matched.”

Why does company data end in 2020?

The company endpoint's last supplied observation is October 2020. The historical view remains available, but the product does not call it current.

Can I download data?

Yes. Oil spill and flare explorer selections include CSV export. The public JSON endpoints are also documented on the Data & methods page.
